When God Is Enough

“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

It is easy to become so focused on what we want God to do that we forget to enjoy being with Him. We pray about our needs, ask Him to answer our requests, and try to do what is right, but somewhere along the way, our relationship with God can become more about what we hope to receive than the joy of knowing Him. God wants more than our efforts and our requests. He wants a relationship with us, one where we learn to trust Him, take delight in His presence, and rest in His faithfulness.

Psalm 37 begins by addressing something many of us struggle with. We can look around and see people who seem to be prospering despite doing wrong, and it can leave us frustrated or wondering why following God sometimes feels so difficult. David reminds us not to fret or envy others, but to trust in the Lord, do good, and remain faithful. Our peace does not have to depend on what other people have or how their lives appear to be going. We can place our confidence in God's character and faithfulness.

As the passage continues, we find a deeper invitation: “Delight yourself also in the Lord.” God is not simply calling us to obey Him or do good things. He wants us to find joy in Him. There is a difference between doing the things we know we should do and genuinely delighting in the One we serve. We can attend church, read our Bibles, pray, and try to live right while still missing the joy of simply being in God's presence.

Kami connects this truth with the story of the woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years, found in Mark 5. She came to Jesus with faith and expectation, believing that even touching His garment could make her well. Her story reminds us that we can come to Jesus believing He is able to meet us in our need. But our relationship with Him cannot be limited to the moments when we need something. God wants us to seek Him because we love Him, not only because we are hoping for an answer.

That changes the way we pray. Instead of treating prayer as a list of requests, we can learn to spend time with God simply because we enjoy being with Him. We can bring Him our hopes, disappointments, questions, and desires, then release them into His hands. We do not have to spend every day worrying about how we will make our dreams happen or wondering when God will answer. We can trust Him with the things that matter to us while continuing to walk faithfully with Him.

The desires of our hearts may also change as we grow in our relationship with God. What we wanted years ago may not be what we want today, and God can use that process to shape our hearts and expand our vision beyond ourselves. Our desires can become connected to His purposes, allowing Him to work through our lives to bless others and advance His kingdom. Trusting God does not mean giving up on every dream. It means letting Him lead us rather than allowing our desires to control us.

We also need to remember that God delights in us. Zephaniah 3:17 describes God rejoicing over His people with singing. Even when we feel rejected, overlooked, or unworthy, His love remains. Jesus demonstrated that love by giving His life for us. We do not have to earn God's affection by performing well or getting everything right. We can come to Him as we are and learn to receive the love He has already shown us.

Ultimately, delighting in the Lord means making Him more than the One we turn to when something goes wrong. He is the One we want to be with in every season. We can bring Him the desires of our hearts, trust Him with the timing and outcome, and learn to find our greatest joy in knowing Him. When our relationship with God becomes the source of our delight, we can face seasons of waiting with greater peace, knowing that our lives are held by the One who loves us and remains faithful.
