God often does some of His greatest work in the ordinary, overlooked seasons of our lives. The story of David reminds us that the places that seem insignificant may actually be the very places where God is preparing us for what comes next. Before David was known as a king, a warrior, or a man after God’s heart, he was simply a young shepherd faithfully caring for sheep while his family overlooked him.
David’s journey moved through seasons of lack, promotion, difficulty, provision, and ultimately the fulfillment of God’s promise. In the fields of Bethlehem, he learned to worship and to fight. When opportunity came, the skills and character developed in that hidden season prepared him to face Goliath and step into greater purpose. Yet promotion brought its own tests, and David discovered that praise could be just as challenging as rejection.
When Saul turned against him, David spent years running for his life, and even reached a point where he believed the promise of becoming king might never happen. Yet when everything was taken from him at Ziklag, David strengthened himself in the Lord rather than allowing disappointment to define him. Later, when Saul died and David had the opportunity to seize the throne, he still stopped to ask God what he should do.
David’s story reminds us that God is working even when we cannot see the fulfillment of His promises. The ordinary seasons are not wasted, the difficult seasons are not meaningless, and promotion is not the final goal. Every season is an opportunity to allow God to shape our character and prepare us for His purpose. What feels like being overlooked may actually be preparation, and what looks ordinary in our hands can become extraordinary when surrendered to God.
